2.2. Investigate

You can Investigate a Location to learn more about it. A Location is a distinct area, such as a room, a clearing, or the depths of a large pond, etc. When you Investigate a new Location, you will first choose if you are using Recon, Analysis, or Sensing to do it. The Perception Skill you choose will affect what types of questions you get to ask as a result. You can hold your questions, asking them after engaging with the Location in other ways.

The GM will respond to each question with basic, but accurate information. Answers gained from this Ability will generally never put you in danger or reveal you. You can gain further info by engaging with the Location, but that can put you in harms way or draw unwanted attention. Your deeper prodding into a Location may also require further Skill Tests.

Clarifying Questions are Free

If ever a GM's description of a room or area is lacking or confusing, feel free to ask clarifying questions. These questions will not count toward the number you get from the Investigate Ability, though the GM may require that you explore more before revealing the answer. If your exploratory actions carry with them a risk, like if those actions would be Loud, the GM should warn you of the danger first.

Investigate

Time: Quick Action Target: *see Questions
Test: *Perception Veiled (Recon, Analysis, or Sensing)
Effect: Knowledge

Choose a Question below. The GM will tell you the full truth if you Pass the Veiled Test, otherwise they can answer how they see fit. If you ask a repeat Question without more knowledge or exploration, the GM may repeat the previous answer without a Test.

The Question you ask determines which Perception Skill the GM will use in the Test. For all curly braces, choose one option or identify a matching target:

  • Recon
    • What is the best way {in/out}?
    • What sorts of {creatures/dangers} are here or nearby?
    • Is there a hidden danger and if so, what part of it do I notice?
    • What is the biggest threat to {me/someone else/something else}?
    • What are the capabilities of {a creature}?
  • Analysis
    • How does this {item/mechanism/setup/known trap} operate?
    • What effect does this {item/mechanism/setup/known trap} have?
    • Is this {wall/floor/ceiling} an internal, external, or boundary {wall/floor/ceiling}?
    • What wear patterns do I see and which worn paths are {most/least} used?
    • Is {an item} here and if so, where are two places it could be?
  • Sensing
    • Is there an active spell here and if its not invisibility or obscured magic, where is the spell's active aura?
    • Was a spell cast within the last hour here and if so, where is the afterimage from casting it?
    • Based on this {aura/afterimage}, what was the spell's {target/source/effect}?
    • Is that {item/feature} magical and if so, does it have more of a conjuration or an enchantment effect?
